Saigon St. Andrew’s Society funded Hy Vong (Go Vap District) School

April 29, 2011 – Education For Development (EFD) has been awarded a $ 5,000 grant from the Saigon St. Andrew’s Society to support the Hy Vong Special Education School in Go Vap District. Its mission is to care and educate children with disabilities such as hearing impairment, mental disability and physical disability.

The School also has an Early Intervention Program for disabled children aged 0 to 6 years old to enable them to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit as well as to support them and their families to have the best possible start in life. The objective of the School is to provide its students with quality education based upon their abilities so they can improve their skills and knowledge as well as integrate into the community.

The School has recently requested support from EFD to purchase educational equipment for the Early Intervention program. Although they have been conducting Early Intervention activities for a couple of years, they only have very limited resources for this program. Besides, professional training for the teachers will increase their skills and knowledge in working with disabled children and youth.

With the great support from Saigon St. Andrew’s Society, in total 130 children with disability will benefit from the implementation of the project. The effective early intervention will help increase the number of children to integrate into mainstream schooling and create more opportunities to guide parents to help children at home. In addition, teachers with improving knowledge and skills will better provide a quality education to disadvantaged children and youth.
